I am at a cross roads with my computer, its an old 2012 i5 mac mini and its showing its age, it cant really handle some of these new soft synths and vsts and I think the graphics card is going.( screen going dark then light intermittently, crashing often etc ) So Im wanting to buy a new computer, trouble is Im not sure whether to invest in a fast specd cheese grater, or save the extra for a trash can.

I already have a giant monitor so dont need a laptop, imac or imac pro, just need the computer heart.

Id like to see what yall are using and read your specs re processors etc for your DAWs and software.

PC with 2014 i5 3.5ghz and 8gb ram I also run a laptop with 2.0ghz centrino and 1gb ram for MIDIsynth editors.

However with Cubase which I use for my electronic music it isnt great.

I dont know if this is down to the computers age, the fact it is a Mac as I have read that Cubase works better on PC or hungry modern soft synths.

Anyway demoting my DAW to sampling, sequencing and processing and getting all my sound sources from hardware seems to have solved the problem, hopefully it will go on another 8 years.

So far Im a little surprised by how little RAM you guys are using.

My interpretations of the needs for a computer and music is loads of RAM, multi core processing and using SSD drives wherever possible.

Im talking about somtehing that is used as part of a fully hybrid set up, loads of plugs ins and softs synths mixed with external audio hardware etc.

It seems that SSD and CPU are more crucial to my workflow than RAM, given that Im using mostly real-time virtual synthesis and heavy processing rather than sampling and audio recording.

Apart from curiosity driven experiments with 256 instances of a soft synth, i very rarely max out my slow 8 core AMD FX 8320.

I have a 2018 27 iMac 40GB1TB, a 2017 MBP 15 16GB1TB and a 2018 Dell XPS13 16GB1TB.

None of them are really suitable for a studio but I am making do.

Id much rather have the computers in the machine room and not have occasional fan noise but I dont really have a choice.
